If I had the cash (I've got teenagers instead), I'd buy one of nearly everything (including an iPhone), as soon as it hit the market. Is this a good idea?
I don't think so. And neither does Jim Collins. According to Collins, author of the excellent book Good To Great, your technology purchases (corporate or personal), should fall into one of three categories. The categories are based on how they match up with your destiny (a.k.a. Hedgehog Concept).
Does it relate directly to your destiny?
- If yes, then buy the leading edge and be a pioneer in the application of it.
- If no (but you need it) then buy the mainstream or (gasp!) old technology.
- If no (and you don’t need it) don’t get it.
More stuff equals more stress unless that stuff accelerates the path towards your destiny. If it does, stuff helps fuel your personal Rest Revolution.
